The heavy transport course kicked off for 2025. On the first afternoon we sadly had one guy fail his learners twice. Not wanting it to be a third, I signed in as a reader writer to sit beside him. I quickly realised he had an ADHD superpower. Once I slowed him down, read the questions and covered the answers, he was able to focus. By letting him answer the question without options, gave him the confidence he needed. Once he told me his answer, I uncovered the options, and he chose the one that was the closet to his. I knew he knew the answers he just needed to slow it down. When the computer said he had passed he did a quick inhale and his eyes shot wide open like a deer in headlights exclaiming, “WHAT!” He was so joyful that it quickly transferred to the other people waiting in the AA. Knowing he was not out of the race was a huge relief.
With a big smile he walked in the following day and announced, “I’m here!” He told me he has struggled all his life and has just gotten use to the fact that he takes longer than everyone else to do anything academic. I was super impressed that he kept his cool and his head in the game to try a third time. He kept thanking me for all my help but honestly, he did all the work.
Watching people like this go from defeat to victory is very rewarding. Those in the community with superpowers often get labelled as dumb or underachievers, when in reality they are highly intelligent and just view the world with different coloured lenses than the rest of us.
